I hate you and your ass face!

So the outing to lemstone never even happened. Saturday was fairly uneventful. In fact I can't even remember what I did other than hold a meeting for the New Orleans team and go to church. Oh yeah then Pancheros with Holly and Rachel and Smay then we rented bad movies. The Forgotten totally sucked so Rachel and I put in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants when Holly went to bed and it was way better. I love movies made for 12 year old girls. It made me miss being in high school which made me miss Crissa and then she called me tonight which was so great.

I've been assigned to get the DVD of Waiting for Guffman because there are special features involved. I'm too excited to wait for Blockbuster Online so I might run to the store tonight. I'm supposed to be at the Halloween drag show with Dan but instead I talked to Bryan and cleaned the chalkboard wall at my apartment. I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm a lot more excited about that than going to a drag show again. Dan is helping me with my outgoing assignments. One of them is to participate in a "cross-cultural research project" so mine is the gay community, specifically gay bars. I mean "alternative nightclubs." It's going pretty well. I'm glad I chose that and not something lame like a nursing home. Although that would be much easier now that my grandma lives in one. Which sucks. Except that there's a big huge case full of birds (they're alive, don't worry) which is pretty great. I remember watching them when I was little when my grandma would bring me to nursing homes to visit her dying friends because old people like little kids. It's weird that she's the sick one now. But the birds are still cool and just like 20 years ago, I'd much rather hang out with the birds than the sad people. Except my grandma whom I love more than any kind of bird I can think of.

Okay long posts are boring so I'll end this one. Besides, I have to get to Blockbuster before they close.

WAIT- if anyone knows why I got a copy of Mission Maker magazine, let me know. It's a mystery I am anxious to resolve.

wmuwygu

so i've realized lately how much being raised by a single mom has affected my life. there are lots of big ways but here's a small one that i've been thinking about tonight.

so tomorrow is saturday and since it's the last saturday of the month, we don't have any sessions at work. this means it's vicki's only saturday off of the month so she's excited. I have normal saturday missionary stuff to do (putting stamps on stuff, writing letters, going to the post office and flexing my microsoft excel muscles) and vicki is excited to clean her house. saturdays are awesome. we're going to go to lemstone and look at bible study stuff for me and anna (who is understandably reluctant) and i'm excited for a family outing. days like this are what saturdays are all about.

point being- in my family growing up, the phrase "wake me up when you get up" was a big part of saturdays. even if i had nothing to do but sit on the couch, i didn't want to be asleep if my mom was awake and doing stuff and she would rather have company while she organized stuff in the basement. this attitude has become a huge part of my personality. when i would go to my dad's house for the weekend my brothers would always wake up first (mostly because i stayed up really late talking them to sleep and then waking them up to make sure someone was listening to me talking) and they would take their blankets and go watch cartoons, forgetting that i had said "wake me up when you get up" before we went to sleep. they could care less if i was there or not, but i felt like i was missing out if i didn't spend every waking moment (literally) in their company. obviously they preferred it when i was sleeping because i was quiet, but i had limited brother time, i had to take advantage.

so i have carried this into my college years. in the dorms it was easy because you automatically woke up when your roommate was up but then in apartment life i never understood why we didn't wake each other up so that we could all be awake together. i don't care if you're hanging out in your room cleaning or playing on your computer but i should be able to wander in and out of your day as i please. i don't understand people who say "i have to study" as an excuse for not coming over. we can sit quietly and not interact, i don't understand why we can't just be alone together. i don't know why people stay in their towns and do nothing when they should be in iowa city doing nothing with me.

so this all ties in because i don't know when this lemstone outing is supposed to take place tomorrow. i know that i'll sleep later than vicki and anna but they don't know they're supposed to wake me up when they get up so that we're all up and ready to go whenever anyone feels like it. it just makes sense people.

the best day ever was when jess and i were randomly awake on a saturday at 9am and called alex because we thought she should be up too. so she came over and we just sat around all together. it was great! so just for the record it's totally okay for you to wake me up just because you're awake and i should be too because what's the point of sleeping if someone else is living their life without you even knowing it?

side effects may include...

So I got my wisdom teeth yanked. I was kind of freaked out because I knew that I would be kind of awake so I was really afraid it would be scary. The waiting room is the worst part. I got it done at the College of Dentistry because I don't have insurance and the waiting room was small and full and stressful. And you have to pass the huge room full of dental chairs. It's the scariest sight ever. The doctor guy was really good at IV's which was really nice and I can't really remember anything. I remember being kind of awake and feeling the roof of my mouth which was really numb and thinking they had left something in my mouth but I couldn't figure out how to talk and tell them and then I figured out that it was my mouth. Next thing I knew I was being wheeled to my mom's car and I said "Hey man, thanks for the ride" to the guy pushing the wheelchair. I slept the whole way home and the bleeding was over in a matter of hours. It's still kind of swollen and sore but they said it'd go away after today and until then, I'm very much enjoying the painkillers.

Last night I had a dream that for my going-away party, the crew decided that we should go to a Newsboys concert. We got there late and they didn't have enough tickets so I couldn't get in. And it wasn't even like we were in a line, it was like a group of 7 of us and we had 6 tickets and they all decided I was the one who didn't get to go. I was so sad. Someone was like "yeah so if you want to just wait in the car that'd be great, you can pull up for us when you see people coming out," so I couldn't even stand outside the building and listen. My friends suck.

D-R-E-W

Main Event was good. I'm glad I went. Cate came along so we had some good driving time. I'm always secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) afraid that our friendship is just over. Jess and I (and I think Alex) were at Mickey's once and there were these girls there who were obviously out on a "Girl's Night Out" sort of situation. We could kind of hear their conversation and noticed that they were "catching up." I never thought I'd have friendships like that and it's weird that I do now but sometimes it's kind of nice. Alex and I went to the new HOA and talked (without making eye contact because we sat by the window and mutally decided to just people-watch) on Friday. Then Cate and I talked the whole way to Cedar Falls (she didn't even get out her crocheting) although we talked a lot about Canada so of course she was totally focused. I sometimes forget that she's on my side about a lot of stuff and it's so nice to be able to say "so my dad sucks" and for her to have her own opinion on the matter. Hooray for knowing people for like 6 years.

Saturday night my parents hosted dinner for a small group so 8 kids (kids = younger than me) from Nebraska came over. Luke's friend Randy stayed for dinner (and was probably totally freaked out) so 2 of the guys sat with them and we heard the words "meth" and "napalm" more than once, but whatever. Kelly the redhead was really (really) excited to hear that my mom works at John Deere even though she's from Kansas so that shouldn't be impressive. I forgot to ask her about the Wizard of Oz Museum. Matt and Molly were my favorites, they were so great. I think they were both genuinely interested in missions and I was really excited to get to talk to them. I felt like I talked a lot but they had lots of questions so I just kept answering. Molly asked my parents how they felt about this whole thing and Bryan talked for a while about being proud and my mom chimed in with some really profound thoughts on family and committment. Cate totally cried. She's emotionally invested in my family I think. What a fornicator.

On Sunday morning Cate talked to the AIM rep about short term stuff and I gave Molly my email and some AIM info so I hope I hear from her. I think I got more out of Drew's "recap" than I did from the other 3 talks. He's a really funny guy. He mentioned dropping out of his 4th grade spelling bee on the word "chew" which was funny because his name is Drew. I do really enjoy the snazzy videos and school spirit at M.E. and I was really happy to get to see Michelle again and hang out in CF in the fall. It was good.

Dear “Mother Nature” Microsoft Office Assistant,

I know we’ve been together for some time now, but I just realized how much I’ve taken you for granted. I was recently reminded how glad I am that you’re not that annoying paperclip thing. I’m also really glad that you’re not the cat that rubs its head against the inside of the screen because it just depresses me that it’s so happy about being trapped in my monitor. Cats are so stupid. You know me so well, I really appreciate that you know I don’t want your help to write this letter but you always remember that I just can’t figure out a Mail Merge on the first try. Sometimes you do my favorite animation at the perfect time, like turning to the Africa side to inspire my support letters, or the butterfly that changes colors. I really don’t like the one where you have a face. It kind of freaks me out. Just so you know. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for always being there up in the corner when I need some help or when I just need you to turn into a bird to distract me from my work.

Love,
Angie

PS- Oh and thanks for hiding too. Hiding is one of my favorite things and I love it that you play along whenever I tell you to.

I feel like it’s complete overkill to keep talking about the Vicki situation but it’s been on my mind a lot lately so tough luck. I’m starting to feel like I’m taking advantage. I think it’s natural to be really humbled by someone’s generosity, but I’m still a little uncomfortable. Actually maybe it’s that I’m starting to feel comfortable. This lady is just letting me be in her family. I live at her house and she keeps feeding me her food and it’s just crazy. Little things like helping her in the garden and doing the dishes just don’t make up for the fact that in lots of little ways I have taken over her house. I’m terrified that Jessica (her daughter) will see that I’ve overhauled her childhood room. Who do I think I am? Vicki now refers to me as one of “her girls” and we have a really great relationship but I’m still just uneasy sometimes. She was talking about how she’s always just felt a connection with me, and how hard it’s going to be when I’m gone. I think it’s just me (obviously) because I still just see myself as a nuisance. I see it as a really big favor but I don’t think that’s how she sees it at all. It’s just incredible that someone can just let another person in like that. I think maybe I still just see her as my boss whom I happen to run into on Sunday nights when Desperate Housewives is on and in the kitchen when I’m leaving in the morning.

I was thinking today about relationships and age differences. I think my theory is holding up. I think that when there’s a significant age difference, the older person is just automatically invested more in the relationship. I don’t know why (this isn’t a complete theory) but something about age or life experience or whatever just slightly skews what the relationship really is. I see it with Vicki. I always knew we got along really well but there’s still the tension of her being older and wiser and in charge of me. So no matter how much we talk and hang out, she’ll always be my boss first. And then there are the kids I babysit. There are a few exceptions (the Frisbie kids for instance) but for the most part I’m the babysitter and they’re just going on with their lives as usual. When I run into them at church or in the mall I expect a huge reaction, but in fact outside of the babysitting situation, I’m really nothing to them. So I think that’s what has happened with Vicki. Not that she’s nothing to me, she’s definitely not. I still haven’t put her outside the work situation so my attitude is just wrong. I still feel incredible guilt when I leave dishes in the sink or clear off space in my room for my printer, even though I know she doesn’t even notice or care. She has in every way welcomed me into her family but I still think I’m “Angie from work” and haven’t noticed that everyone in her life already knows about me because she cares about me and is happy to have me around. Okay I think I’m done obsessing about this for a little while. Mostly because I’ve stayed up way too late watching Felicity and I’m too tired to keep typing.

yikes!

I was just sharing my bed with a very scary spider. I felt something tickly and looked down and a huge hairy spider was crawling on my leg. Gross. Now all I can think of is all the spider hiding places there are in this room and I can’t sleep. Is there some sort of product out there that just makes the bugs go away? I don’t really want to kill them; I just don’t want them so close. Also I was flipping channels tonight and watched a show about chicken processing and it was so sad. I hate that I’m easily manipulated by things that are meant to toy with your emotions. I feel girly and weak. But it was really sad. Seriously. According to Aaron it’s really easy to be a vegetarian in England so maybe I’ll give it a try. I’ll keep you posted.

all i taste is envelope paste

I love Vicki. We just sat and talked for a couple hours (and ate chips and salsa and drank red wine out of Welsh's jelly jar glasses) and it was so good. For a while I was afraid I just liked talking to her because she doesn't know all of my stories. I think it's past that. I think it's been a long time since I've been able to start fresh with a person. It's also the first time in a long time that I've had a real connection with someone from the first time we met. I can be totally real with her and I feel like we connect in a really honest way. She's been through some tough stuff so it's easy to talk to her about the crap of life and she's so wise, but she doesn't know it so it's just easy. She even watched Globe Trekker with me and we sat and talked about Cambodia. Not very many people are that cool.

So anyway. I'm almost completely caught up on the stuff I was behind on. I'm almost in correspondance with all of my supporters and today I even sorted my stationary box. I'm trying to get rid of all of it before I leave so that means sending about 19 letters a week. Get ready. I don't have that many friends so if you're reading this, you should be expecting lots of mail. Lucky you!

Next weekend is Main Event. I can't believe it's already the middle of October. I feel like I'm missing it, I don't know what to do. Although Fall = Main Event so that will help. I wonder if Fall weather will happen in England. I realized the other day that I forgot to remember that it was my last spring. I panicked a little and assigned Alex to find out if the UK has Shamrock Shakes. I'll let you know. We're skipping the Saturday stuff and everyone is coming over to watch the Michigan game on my parent's huge TV.

Okay that's all I've got, you're updated.

I didn't feel so bad till the sun went down

the krui dj's need to communicate more and stop playing venus every 2 hours. or i need to stop forgetting my cd's at work and stop listening to the crappy radio.

mark's going away party was today. it was so surreal. i cried like 5 times. i was probably by far the least patriotic person in the room and i was so sad. seeing his worried parents made me feel really guilty for choosing to leave my family for 2 years. although hopefully there will be no semi-automatic weapons involved in my overseas experience.

goodbye count: 4

i just talked to matt (on my parent's lawn- i'm telling you it's a great lawn) until my phone died. i always feel like i don't talk to him enough but then when i'm talking to him it seems like there's really nothing new to say. mostly because he's all business and just calls to check on future plans and i don't really care enough about future plans to have anything new to say about them. then one of us brings up some subject and matt talks about it at length when i would rather be telling him about falling off the curb today at the movie theater and skinning my knees. all i ever do is complain about talking to jess constantly about stupid stuff and only talking to matt sporadically and only about serious stuff. who do i think i am.

you know who's great? alex. alex and i have a pretty great mix of random phone calls to tell eachother about funny situations and actual conversations about things that matter. she's the first one i thought of (other than myself at the age of nine) today when i biffed it because she's the only one who knows how funny it is when people fall over. i'm fairly confident that i'll be able to maintain a friendship with alex from across the pond. she's promised to come visit. IN FACT she's the only one who promised to come visit me in africa. now keep in mind it was on the basis of having an excuse to come to africa, not having an excuse to see me...but i'll take what i can get. alex is pretty responsible, she got a job close to home that she likes which is apparently beyond the grasp of more people than i thought. alex likes beer and knows the hula. what more could you ask for? siblings, you could ask for her to have siblings. alas, it's too late for that. anyway. there's some stuff about alex. i thought alex was my normal friend but it turns out i was really very wrong. no one should be that into canada. she felt bloglected so now you know she's in my life. maybe sometime i'll make a longer list of other things of interest pertaining to alex. that would be a silly list. almost as silly as the list of gross things jess does that i'm going to give her husband on their wedding night. i'm really looking forward to that list. i've never seen alex use the air conditioning vents to dry off her sweat stains.

ps- saw the new trailer for goblet of fire today. ralph fiennes is voldemort! so exciting! i'm seriously considering re-re-reading the book before the movie comes out.

hooray! a list!

It's so hard not to organize these by year or genre and even harder to justify why or how much or little i liked some of these. Very hard. Maybe the hardest thing I've ever done. Other than catching a huge spider for Luke's bug collection that's due on Monday. It was really huge and had fangs, visible fangs. Anyway, thank you Holly for the next generation in email entertainment.
