Minneapolis

I invited my mom to come along to the AIM regional picnic this weekend. It was really good that she came. It was kind of a long drive just for a picnic but she got to meet lots of people who have lived and raised their kids and survived in Africa for 2o years or so. There was mixed reception of the UK TIMO team but most people were pretty excited about it. This girl Leah taught in a national school in Uganda last year and was really excited. I told her she could join our team and she laughed...but I was serious, she was pretty cool. We have fancy new postcards from the PR department and the TIMO website just won some sort of award. You really should check it out, it's pretty snazzy. We got new cdroms for videos and stuff which look nice but the videos are still pretty crappy which is sad.

At one point I was arranging another trip to the cities to check out refugee ministry there and I overheard my mom talking to this lady about how she (my mom) feels about me leaving. She said she was glad that it's England and that she thinks it's right for right now but then she started talking about how it's right for our family, and how when one person leaves it's like part of the whole family goes, so she was glad that this fits our family right now. it was really good, she sounded so smart and cute and totally like a mom. i think that's how the church should look, that we should be in community in such a way that we become part of eachother, so that when some of us go, we take the hearts of everyone with us. It makes it seem less daunting to be able to claim that. and it makes everything a bigger decison when it's not just you. I guess that's why it was harder for my family than I thought it should be. I was just thinking that it was me going, but my mom doesn't see me as an individual (which causes some problems) so there was a big committment for her as well. So basically it was really good for me that she went this weekend. I got to see where her heart is at in a new way.

the wierdest day ever

So Kate comes over wednesday night to help me finish painting my room. Of course the 5 gallon bucket of paint is almost empty so I had to run to Lowes to get more paint but we got done by 12 and I finished moving everything in the apartment off of the carpet. I felt like I was getting ready for a flood. I figured the carpet guys would come around 9 so it was ok that I stayed up until like 2. Then my phone rings at 7am and it's the carpet guy and he's there. I was so sad. I threw on jeans and brushed my teeth and went to the coffeehouse and wrote my financial appeal for like 6 hours and watched the coffeehouse guys talk about how long I've been there (and probably how greasy my hair is because I'm unshowered). I have no idea how long it takes for one random guy (and his handlebar mustache) to carpet my entire apartment so I call Kate and go shower at her house and help her do laundry and pack. I'm so jealous that she's packing, except for the fact that she bought a horrible preschool teacher denim jumper...it's so gross but she loves it and that's why i love her.

Vicki called to see if I could come into work early which I really didn't want to do but I did. I ran home to change my shoes and the carpet was done but the guy had knocked down one of the shelves in my closet so about 2/3 of my belongings were strewn about. It was so sad. I didn't even change my shoes, I just went to work...where I stayed 3 hours late. But I did leave and go to Fareway to buy chocolate syrup for Baxter and Welt to make chocolate milk. I love those boys. We decided that we were the Naomi's Kitchen Dream Team and that there should be a draft. The rest of the evening was spent deciding how to rate employees and what our shirts should say.

chicago/milwaukee

I went to Highland Park to see Alex. We were supposed to go to the Renaissance Faire but we went to Irish Fest instead because Jess didn't have any money. So instead we drove to the Chicago to see Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. When we were standing in line I was bored so I cleaned out my bag and found the temporary tattoo from the missouri state fair that matt didn't want so Jess helped Michelle put it on. It secretly really bothered me that not only would Matt not apply it immediately (like Bryan did) but that he refused to even pretend to keep it. That's how I am...it sucks. Alisha and I always got tattoos from the quarter machines at wal-mart and licked them onto eachother so that's what Jess and Michelle did. See, cool people dig temporary tattoos from the Missouri State Fair. The show was pretty funny, I'm glad I got to see it. One of the plays was that everyone in the back row had to do the chicken dance on stage. We were in the back row. Oh and we had Potbelly Sandwiches and it was delicious, as promised.

this trip made me realize that it really is going to take a lot of work to maintain relationships with these (you) people. it's been pretty easy so far but mostly because there were reasons that we still see eachother so it'll be weird when that's not possible. One of the things we need for TIMO is a digital voice recorder so I think that's how I'm going to keep in touch with my family. You know, Felicity style. It should be pretty easy to email them a sound file, right? Are you so excited for international mail??? Well get excited.

pictures from kansas city!

I went to KC to meet Amanda who will be my roommate in Sheffield. We also met Peter and Judith who are from Sheffield. They were in town for a wedding and brought us pictures and told us all about Sheffield and took us to the fair. We saw cloggers and pig races and lots of animals who aren't from the Missouri area. There was not a butter cow. They taught the bears lots of tricks which they called "behaviors," including saluting our troops in Iraq....yep. The tigers were from India but performed to the music from the Lion King. We went out for BBQ and then back to the hotel to learn all about Sheffield and get excited and then realize that we still have to wait four months. rude.

Sunday I drove to Omaha really early to go to church with Matt. We went to this guy's house for frozen pizza for lunch and listened to Matt talk about movies. It was this old house where guys who love Jesus live and love Jesus together. It was pretty a pretty cool situation, they lived together really intentionally and there was accountability and all that jazz. It was good. Then I hung out with Bryan while Matt went on a date. I got a campfire mocha at Caribou Coffee and the dude sprinkled little marshmallows on the top and it was so cute. We did a crossword puzzle and Bryan hated it but that's okay because not everyone bases their worth on the completion of word puzzles in the newspaper. We watched Six Feet Under then some movie that confused me and the next day I had a really long lunch with Matt then drove to Liz and Aaron's for dinner. It was a great (long) weekend.

I'm really glad that I got to meet Amanda fairly soon before we leave. We haven't been so good at emailing but I was really afraid that we'd email all the time and I'd have this idea of who she was, and then we'd meet and I'd be totally wrong. Which ended up being pretty true because she's way cooler than I thought she would be. I didn't want to get my hopes up but now I can because I think we'll get along really well. I'm nervous to live with someone who I don't know very well but I think it'll be great for me. Maybe some of that intentional stuff from up there ^
